No need for apology

To the Editor:

I read with interest the article concerning La Grande Mayor Dan Pokorney regarding the issue of his Facebook postings on the subject of gay marriage. I know Mr. Pokorney and am well aware of his Christian religious affiliation.

Quite frankly, I was disappointed that circumstances seemingly required him to place political correctness ahead of religious beliefs and principles and, thus, apologize for his postings.

It is reported that Mr. Pokorney likened gay marriage to an “abomination” and that approval of such as recently occurred in Washington state amounted to a modern Sodom and Gomorrah.

Frankly, for those of us who are orthodox rather than “pick and choose” Christians, both statements are true. There are numerous references in the Bible to homosexual relationships being disordered, unnatural and as the word abomination defines them, disgusting.

To an orthodox Christian believer, no alteration of facts for purposes of condoning the sinful behavior of others is justified. This is particularly true since our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and values, something which too many politicians today willingly ignore.

I am sorry Dan felt compelled to apologize for writing the truth. Since it is highly unlikely that the La Grande City Council will, or should, ever consider enacting any laws relative to gay marriage, I fail to see where Mr. Pokorney’s views on the subject have any relationship at all to his position as mayor.
