Study forest travel plan

To the Editor:

The Wallowa-Whitman Forest Travel Management Plan came out officially on March 16.

According to the Environmental Impact Statement, 4,300 miles of roads remain open for travel, which is less than half of all the roads in the forest.

Anyone who had sent in a comment on the proposed road closures now has until April 30 to file a final appeal to the forest supervisor.

Information on the road closures can be obtained at the forest office or through the website, www.fs.usda.gov/wallowa-whitman (click on “Travel Management Plan”).

Maps of open roads are available and are necessary as they show which roads will be legal to travel. The closures will go into effect June 1. No cross country travel will be allowed.

This travel plan is a restriction of your freedom to travel within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

This plan is a declared rule that has the force of law and was imposed on you by an unelected bureaucrat (the forest supervisor).

Stiff fines will be issued if you are found driving on a closed road.

Everyone needs to get the travel plan information and the maps and study them.

Contact your congressmen and county commissioners and let them know how you feel about these closures.

The roads affected in this plan are only on half of the forest area.

Get involved now as more road closures are coming.
