Congratulating athletes

To the Editor:

Thank you for your coverage of the all-league selections for the Blue Mountain Conference in Thursday night’s paper.

I found it interesting that while the local 1A schools received full page spreads with individual pictures, we received an article. You would be amazed at how important the coverage of the sports can be for these young athletes.

I have to say that this past year has been disappointing for the lack of coverage of our specific events.

I understand that you rely heavily on communication from coaches and sometimes that doesn’t happen.

But I would hope that you are also conscious of your subscribers and the local school districts you serve and how important athletics are to these smaller communities.

On different occasions, important games have occurred and there was little coverage. Or, there was more coverage for our competitors in Wallowa County than what the local schools received.

Case in point, the front picture of this specific article covering the all-selections was of a player from Enterprise instead of one from the local schools. I understand the importance of widening your subscription base, but they have their own paper.

On another note, I’d like to mention that one of the key elements of the all-league selections that night at the district tournament in Pendleton was the fact that the Lady Huskies of Elgin, under the direction of coaches Greg Oveson and Sheila Phelps, earned the sportsmanship award, which was voted on by the officials of the Blue Mountain Conference.

In my opinion, this is one of the highest honors to be given for an athletic season and I would like to congratulate the athletes and coaches for representing their town, schools and themselves in a manner of utmost character.
