Good luck, retirees

To the Editor:

Every May and June, as the school year comes to an end, we hear about teacher retirements. I would like to say congratulations to all the educators who are bringing their careers to an end this year.

I would especially like to pay tribute to Greg Franklin.

We became colleagues at La Grande High School in the 1981-1982 school year. Greg was an instant success with the kids. He instilled in them a love of sciences in general and Earth Science in particular.

I remember one late September when a Mr. Franklin group had just returned to school after a two-day field trip into the Wallowa Mountains.

Of course, the last day and a half it poured rain and spit snow at them. The kids were tired, cold, wet, muddy and looked miserable.

However, when I asked two of them how the trip was, their unabashed enthusiasm for the experience was astounding.

There are many geologists and those with a love for geology today who caught their passion in one of Greg’s classes. I wish him good luck and happy retirement.
