SALEM — Fifth-seeded Union/Cove upset the fourth-seeded Pioneers of Western Mennonite 6-4 Wednesday in the first round of the 2A/1A softball playoffs.

Kindra Moore’s bases loaded walk in the second inning got the Lady Cats on the board before Carsyn Roberts came through with a two-run double.

The Pioneers got a pair of runs in the fourth inning on two wild pitches, then added another in the fifth on a Union/Cove error to tie the game.

But a three-run sixth inning by the Lady Cats proved to be the difference maker. Keesha Sarman had a two-run double and scored on an error by Western Mennonite.

“Our youth showed a little bit,” coach Paul Phillips said.

“But I’m proud of these kids. Western Mennonite is a darn good team, but so are we.”

Roberts got the win, while Dani Sturm picked up the save after starting the game. The two combined for six strikouts, six walks and allowed seven hits.

The game was moved to South Salem High School due to rainy conditions.

Union/Cove will now travel to play top-seeded Heppner/Ione Friday.

The Mustangs defeated Oakridge 15-0 Wednesday.

The start time for Friday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
