Do what is right

To the Editor:

In the year 1770, Alexander Fraser Tyler wrote the following:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over lousy fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

“The average of the world’s great civilizations before they declined has been 200 years. These nations have progressed in this sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith; from faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to great abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again to bondage.”

Does this sound familiar?

We have lost our spiritual faith as a nation, and have had abundance. In my opinion, this nation is now in a state of apathy, where our freedoms are being eroded rapidly and few seem to care.

It may be difficult, if not impossible, to recover from our huge national debt (not counting our state debt), which could make it easy for a dictatorship to take over, claiming it to be the only solution.

What can average Americans do? The only thing is to vote out those legislators who have caused this problem, and vote in people who have the moral backbone to stand up and be counted and do what is right.

Avoid evil and do good.
