Jerry Cook

La Grande

1926-2012

 

Jerry V. Cook, 86, of La Grande, died July 31 at Grande Ronde Hospital.  A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Island City Cemetery. Jerry was born on Feb. 27, 1926, in La Grande, the son of Paul Joseph and Lena Margaret (Stein) Cook.  He graduated from La Grande High School with the Class of 1944. After graduating he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.  After his honorable discharge, he returned to La Grande and worked briefly for the Union Pacific Railroad before going to work for Boise Cascade, in a career that spanned 37 years. On Jan. 28, 1976, he married Violet Mae Johnson in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2011. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a member of the American Legion and the NRA. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help anyone who needed him.

Survivors include his children, Susan M. Cook of Milton-Freewater, Frances Williamson of
La Grande and Judy Rumer of Portland; his sister, Loretta Beeson of
La Grande; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Cecilia Celestine Wylde. 

Edgar Bloom

Hermiston

 

Edgar Bloom, 81, of Hermiston, died in La Grande on Monday, July 30, 2012. No services are planned at this time. A full obituary will be published at a later time. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Duane Hoskins

Formerly of Elgin

1940-2012

 

Duane E. Hoskins of Athena died on July 25 at his home at the age of 72. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Administration Patient Activities in care of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater

Duane E. Hoskins was born on May 1, 1940, to Ernest and Juanita (Hayes) Hoskins in Umapine. He grew up and graduated from Umapine High School. Duane enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and served his country until his honorable discharge in 1959. He married Sarah L. Hodgen on July 15, 1960, in Umapine. They moved to Elgin in 1967 where Duane worked for Boise Cascade for 37 years and moved to Athena in 2006 after his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going mushrooming.

Survivors include his wife Sarah Hoskins; two daughters, Wendy Wheeler of Milton-Freewater, and Vickie Hoskins of Elgin; one sister, Bonnie Ferguson of Baker City; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several brother and sister-in-laws.

His parents, two brothers, Raymond and Darrell Hoskins, and one sister, Lisa Hasberry, preceded him in death.
