UNION — Colton Eubanks and a potent rushing attack by Powder Valley was too much for Union Friday night, as the Badgers picked up their first win of the season, 46-26.

“It was a really good game,” Powder Valley coach Dan Townsend said.

“Union played very well coming off a huge win against Pine Eagle last week. We took a little while to get going offensively, but once our offensive line made some adjustments it really opened up our running game.”

The game was a close one throughout the first half, as Union’s Ty Coon traded blows with

Coon broke off a 60-yard touchdown run on the Bobcats’ first possession, before Eubanks answered in the second quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run to tie the game at six.

“Ty is just Ty,” Union coach Jon Reynolds said.

“He works hard. He’s a heck of a kid to have. He wants to be out there, and he wants to lead.”

Union regained the lead with 6:58 to play in the second quarter when quarterback Aaron Clark connected with Cody VanderZanden on a 70-yard touchdown pass.

An errored snap over Chace Dixon’s head on Powder’s ensuing possession led to a safety and made the Union lead 14-6.

“Defensively we took a while to get settled in,” Townsend said.

“Union is a well-coached team, with some really good athletes.”

With 4:24 left in the first half Eubanks broke off another touchdown run, this one going for 76 yards.

The two-point conversion tied the game at 14.

The Badgers took their first lead of the game with 2:37 left in the second quarter on a 27-yard pass and catch from Dixon to Tyler Robinson, giving Powder a 22-14 lead at the half.

“Chace had a good day for us. His completions should have been higher but we had several dropped passes,” Townsend said.

“We’re still trying to figure things out offensively with our younger receiving group, and Chace did a really nice job working with Robinson later in the game.”

The Badgers wasted no time in adding to the lead early in the third quarter as Eubanks took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score.

After a Union turnover, Eubanks broke free for a 73-yard touchdown run and just like that Powder Valley had blown the game open.

The Badgers stretched the lead to 46-14 at one point after a pair of scores by Quin Stephens.

Union scored two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on a 25-yard touchdown run by Clark, and another on a 16-yard touchdown catch by VanderZanden.

But in the end the deficit was too much and Powder Valley was able to pick up win No. 1.

“A well-needed victory for us against a good team who was really building some momentum this season,” Townsend said.

Eubanks finished with 251 yards rushing on 24 carries and had three touchdowns.

Stephens had 47 yards on 13 carries and a pair of scores.

Robinson caught five balls for 111 yards and a touchdown.

For Union, Coon had 180 yards rushing on 14 carries as he battled cramps throughout the game.

Clark had 58 yards on 14 carries and completed eight of 13 passes for 197 yards. VanderZanden had 136 yards receiving on four catches.

The Badgers are now 1-2 and host Notus (Idaho) Friday at 7 p.m.

Union (1-2) plays at Cove Friday.
