COVE — Mistakes plagued the Union Bobcats Friday when they traveled to Cove looking for their second win of the season.

It took almost a complete half for Union to find the end zone Friday, relying on a long run by Ty Coon to score with only a minute left.

But those six points just cut the Cove lead to 34-6.

And it took just 50 seconds for the Leopards to score again, making it a 42-6 lead with four seconds left in the first half.

After the break, Union still had a problem stopping a short handed Cove squad before losing the non-league contest 64-12.

The Leopards only suited up 16 players for Friday’s game.

The 50-second scoring drive had a key reception by Brandon Batty to the Union 30 yard line.

The next play was a pass to Carl Gray that brought a first down at the 15-yard-line with 26 seconds left. The third pass in a row was a 15-yarder to Tayton Duby for the score. Gray’s conversion reception made it 42-6.

Coon made a big return, taking the ball out to the Union 43-yard line on the kickoff return. But a false start penalty moved the ball back to the 39 with just 4.3 seconds on the clock before halftime. Coon took the ball, ran through the Cove defender down to the Leopards’ 36-yard line after a 25-yard gain and time expired.

Duby continued to plague the Bobcats, taking the second-half kickoff all the way back to the Union 19-yard-line. Three plays later, Batty scored on a one-yard run, making it 48-6.

The next time the Bobcats had the ball, they fumbled it right back to the Leopards at the 13-yard-line. Luke Bundren took the ball to the two and then Beau Knight scored with 8:59 left in the third period to make it 56-6.

After Union returned the ball to its own 40, the Bobcats turned it over again when Jaden Moore stepped in front of the tight end and intercepted an Aaron Clark pass at the Union 40-yard line with 7:59 left in the third quarter.

Staying on the ground, Duby made an eight-yard scoring run on the sixth-straight running play, improving the Leopards’ lead to 62-6 with 4:43 left in the quarter. Knight added two more when he broke four tackles to get into the end zone for a conversion, making it 64-6.

Between Coon and Braden Anderson, the Bobcats moved the ball down to the Cove 36. Another Coon run moved the ball to the 18 and had a face-masking penalty move the ball down to the 13-yard line.

Cove was called for a second straight face-masking.

On the next play, Coon got the 12 yards back and added a touchdown.

The play of Duby really stood out, according to Cove coach Shawn Parker. “He had a heck of a game.”

But he wasn’t the only one drawing praise from Parker after the game. “Derek Murchison, a sophomore, came in and did great. Brandon, Tayt and Carl all made incredible catches,” he said.

One problem with being short-handed, the coach said, was that they didn’t have enough players on the sidelines to put in a full second string. “We only have one center. And he’s a starter,” the coach added.

The victory improved Cove’s season record to 2-1, after losing a game when Pomeroy, Wash., canceled a week ago.

Union fell to 1-3 for the season.
