The La Grande High School volleyball team continued its domination of the Greater Oregon League with a 3-0 sweep of rival Baker Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers won 25-21, 25-14, 25-17.

With the win LHS improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the GOL, having won 11 straight league games dating back to 2010.

“It was a good team effort,” coach Melinda Becker said.

“We had a balanced offensive attack.”

Baker looked game early on, taking a 6-2 lead in Game 1 before La Grande rallied to tie the game at 11-11.

From there the Lady Tigers gained control of the set, stretching the lead to 17-13 and 23-18 before closing it out.

In Game 2 Baker took a quick 2-1 lead, but La Grande responded with a 6-0 run to go up 7-2.

It was all LHS after that, as the Lady Tigers led by eight at one point — 17-9 — before eventually taking a two-set lead.

“Baker did a good job defensively. We didn’t panic when we got down. We took it one point at a time, and in volleyball that’s important,” Becker said.

LHS found itself down once again early in Game 3, but the Lady Tigers put together a run to tie the game at 5-5.

And just like in the previous two sets, La Grande controlled things from there, stretching its lead to 21-14 and then 24-15 before ending it on a missed serve by Baker.

Denise Comfort had 10 kills, nine digs, and she scored five points while going 17 for 18 on serve-receive.

Olivia Trotter had nine kills, seven points and three serving aces.

Breanna Partney finished with eight digs, six kills and was 100 percent serving.

“They really stepped up tonight,” Becker said.

“Breanna had an all- around tough game. She had some great points for us. Some momentum-changing points.”

Madison Elliott had 19 assists, eight digs and three kills, while Anneliese
Wiseman had four kills and one assist.

Hanna Cashell finished with four digs and one assist.

“She had a really good game off the bench,” Becker said of Cashell.

Despite being off a full week since their last match, the Lady Tigers were able to pull off its ninth consecutive GOL sweep dating back to last season.

The Lady Tigers haven’t lost a GOL match since October 2010.

“There are some pros and cons (to being off a week),” Becker said.

“My girls are gamers. They want to play games.”

La Grande will host its annual tournament Saturday.

Ontario, Baker, Nyssa, Vale, Fruitland junior varsity, Payette and Riverside will all be in attendance.

The action starts at 8 a.m. in the LHS gymnasium.

La Grande’s next GOL match is Oct. 2 when it travels to play McLoughlin.

The Lady Tigers will host Ontario Oct. 4.
