Son mistakenly shoots father

A hunting accident north of Wallowa Saturday evening resulted in the death of a North Plains man.

Michael Roy Rydquist, 62, was hunting 25 miles north of Wallowa when his son, John Roy Rydquist of Portland, accidentally shot and killed him.

According to Fred Steen, Wallowa County sheriff, Michael Rydquist had crouched down and taken a shot at a deer while John Rydquist took a shot at the animal. Unknown to the son, Michael Rydquist had moved in front of him and could not be seen through his scoped rifle.

John Rydquist asked neighboring hunters to call for help. Michael Rydquist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Steen said after investigating the incident it was determined the shooting was an accident and no criminal charges were filed.

However, during the investigation it was discovered that John Rydquist had two outstanding warrants for DUII arrests; one from Multnomah County and one from Washington County. He was lodged in the Union County jail on the two warrants.
