STANFIELD — The Union High School volleyball team had a “pretty good weekend,” according to coach Mendy Clark.

The Lady Cats split their games at the Blue Mountain District tournament, falling to Heppner (21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 11-15) but beating Grant Union (21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15) to finish in third place.

Union will now have to wait and see whether it will travel or be home for a first-round playoff game Saturday.

Against Heppner, Bayly Poor was 100 percent on 28 serves and had seven aces. She also tallied nine kills.

Viki McCabe had a stellar weekend, her coach said. McCabe had 12 kills against the Mustangs, while Kelsey Walenta had eight. Keesha Sarman finished with 18 digs.

“Heppner was keying in on other hitters and that opened the door for Viki,” Clark said.

Against Grant Union, McCabe had 19 blocks and had five stuffed blocks in a row.

“She was a machine,” Clark said.

“She just knew where to be.”

McCabe also had seven kills. Dani Sturm had a team-high 12 kills and just one error on 24 hits.

Sarman had 21 digs, 16 of which were perfect.

Heppner went on to beat Weston-McEwen in five sets in the BMC title game, upsetting the regular-season champions.

Enterprise squared off with Grant Union earlier in the day.

It was the Prospectors who came out on top in four games 25-11, 15-25, 25-10, 28-26.

There is still a slate of games to be played around the state on Tuesday, and the rankings will freeze then, clearing up the playoff picture.

So the Blue Mountain Conference teams will have to sit and wait before they know where and who they will play to keep their season alive.
