DRAIN — The Union High School volleyball team saw its season come to an end Saturday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

The Lady Cats lost to North Douglas 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25).

“We didn’t have a spectacular game, but we didn’t play bad either,” coach Mendy Clark said.

“North Douglas did a good job of taking us out of our rhythm.”

Dani Sturm had five kills on 23 hits with zero errors.

Bayly Poor had 10 kills, Kelsey Walenta had eight and Viki McCabe finished with seven.

Keesha Sarman added 21 digs.

“We were getting (hits), but North Douglas plays really good defense,” Clark explained.

The loss left Clark a little puzzled for the most part.

“I honestly don’t know what happened. We played OK but not spectacular. And in the playoffs you have to play spectacular.

“Pretty much, on that day, North Douglas got to 25 faster than we did,” Clark said.

Although the Lady Cats’ season came to an early end, Clark said this season was a successful one.

“Obviously it was a winning season. We know we can play,” she said.

“Yeah our season ended but the team played well. I’m super proud of them.”

North Douglas moves on to face Heppner in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

Another Blue Mountain Conference team, Weston-McEwen, will face off with Reedsport at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.
