Hot Hornets bury Leopards in 94-12 romp

CAMAS VALLEY —  The defending state 1A football champions were undefeated last season.

They still are this season.

The Cove Leopards became the latest victims of the Hornet swarm when they were stung with a lopsided 94-12 loss in the first round of the state playoffs Saturday.

The Hornets jumped out to a 62-6 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to 88-6 at halftime.

Josh Mattox completed nine of 10 passes for 288 yards for Camas Valley, who advances to play Sherman in the second round Friday.

Josh Garcia led the ground attack with 120 yards on five carries. As a team the Hornets rushed for 240 yards.

Five different receivers caught a pass, with four players finishing with two catches.

The loss ends the Leopards’ season.

Cove went 5-4 this year and will lose seven players to graduation.
