Here we go again

To the Editor:

The Union County three commissioners have decided to buy 60 acres of the Baum Industrial Park for $345,000.

The current owner should be happy as he was evidently unable to sell on  the market. I think any large purchase such as this should be voted on by county residents. In the past the county has not had a good record. Cases in point: Peacock Lumber Co., Recycling Plant, Buffalo Peak Golf Course and the Union/Wallowa Railroad. Every one lost money.

The city of La Grande developed the Business Park and look how long that is taking to fill up. I have lived here for 73 years and I see our downtown dying yet they spend money on the new sidewalks or whatever they are doing, and I don’t see much change.

We are always told it’s a good deal cause it’s grant money or a good loan. Whatever, it still comes out of our pockets from tax money. Besides, who wants to park downtown and get a ticket when we can go to Bi-Mart or Walmart and park for free. It’s time for the local governments to stay out of the real estate business.
