SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Eastern Oregon University student-athlete Leigh Anne MacCarthy has been named a Scholar Athlete for her success in the classroom.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced last week that 408 volleyball student-athletes have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

Hastings (Neb.) and Indiana Tech lead all institutions with eight individuals on the list.

A total of 21 Cascade Conference volleyball players earned the honors.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

MacCarthy was a busy athlete this fall, competing in both volleyball and cross country.

In 27 matches played on the volleyball court, MacCarthy finished with 64 digs and 11 serving aces.

This was her first season running cross country at the collegiate level, and MacCarthy helped the EOU women’s team place 13th at the NAIA national meet in Vancouver, Wash.

MacCarthy finished 68th overall with a time of 19:08.

“Leigh Anne has been an absolute delight,” coach Ben Welch said at the time.

“Coming out of volleyball like that, in her fifth race ever and to finish well inside the top 100 at the national meet, is a terrific deal.”

And MacCarthy did all this while maintaining her school work.

If there was ever a Scholar Athlete, she’s it.
