Sturm earns all-state nod

The Blue Mountain Conference ruled the roost in the 2A all-state volleyball selections released recently.

The BMC had six out of 22 players get selected to three different teams made up of the best volleyball players in the state. 

Union’s Dani Sturm was named third-team all-state after helping guide the Lady Cats to a 19-9 record this season. Union had a third-place finish at the BMC district tournament.

UHS fell to North Douglas in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

Sturm had five kills on 23 hits with zero errors in her final match of her senior campaign.

Sturm was also a first-team all-BMC player this season.

She was joined on the third-team all-state team by fellow BMC player Alana Wilson of Heppner.

Heppner’s Baily Bennett and Weston-McEwen’s Molly von Borstel both were selected to the first team, while Grant Union’s Hailey McConnell was first-team libero.

Kaitlyn Slinkard of Grant Union was the lone second-team selection from the BMC.

Shealene Little of Culver earned the state player of the year award.

Little led Culver to the 2A state title game this season where the Bulldogs defeated Days Creek, 3-2.

Randi Viggiano, also of Culver, was named the 2A coach of the year after going 26-5 this season and 13-1 in the Tri-River Conference.
