The La Grande girls swim team had no problem swimming past the competition at its home invite Saturday.

The Lady Tigers racked up 123.5 points for a first-place finish, while Pendleton finished second with 73.

The Dalles-Wahtonka (58.5), Baker (46) and Hermiston (7) wrapped up the top five.

On the boys side, Pendleton finished first with 104 points, while La Grande was second with 74.

LHS was followed by The Dalles-Wahtonka (38), Baker (31) and Hermiston (31).

“So far the girls team is shaping up well, with a very dominant performance this past weekend,” coach Darren Dutto said.

“More importantly, we had lots of swimmers place high enough to score points for the team. What we need to maintain is achieving two or three swimmers in scoring position for any meet. This will be our focus for the remainder of the season.”

Becca Haynes won both the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.21) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.75).

Abbey Felley came out on top in the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.05) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:20.18), while Shelby Baker placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.89) and the 100-yard freestyle (59.44).

“We also had solid second-place performances came from Hannah Roberts (freshman), Amber Mullarkey (senior), and Mackenzie O’Rourke (junior),” Dutto said.

The team of Haynes, Felley, Baker and Hannah Roberts won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:05.99, while Felley, Haynes, O’Rourke and Jasmine Smith won the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:14.65).

“I am also going to continue to push the relays. We came close to winning all three relays this weekend, and this will be a continuing goal for us — try to place each relay at the top,” Dutto said.

La Grande finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

For the boys team, Bryce Ebel’s swim in the 100-yard butterfly was the highlight of the weekend.

His time of 55.18 set a meet record and would have placed him in the top six at the state meet last year.

Ebel also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.35.

Josh Ebel won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.12, while  Keegan Dutto placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:38.34.

Bryce Ebel, Josh Ebel, Keegan Dutto and Emmit Ambert joined forces for a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:47.04. The team of Dutto, Josh Ebel, Bryce Ebel and Dean Ricker placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.92.

“For the boys, all 10 individual swims (two for each swimmer) were personal best times,” Coach Dutto said.

“It is a young team and a small team, but they’re really training and performing well.

“I am so excited about this team. I am really looking forward to our January meets when we are going to have good competition.”

La Grande doesn’t return to action until Jan. 5 when it competes in Baker.
