Donna Jean Thyfault

Formerly of La Grande

Donna Jean Thyfault, 90, formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 7 at the home of her son. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest East Cemetery in La Grande. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory and Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary.

Donna was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Concordia, Kan., to Leslie Robert and Viola Mae (Cyphers) Schleuder. She was the second child of seven and remained close to her three brothers and three sisters throughout their lives.

On April 28, 1938, Donna married Ferdinand “Fergie” Albert Thyfault in Concordia. They left Kansas soon after their marriage, living briefly in California and then Oregon, first in La Grande and then in Pendleton where they resided for more than 40 years. Together they raised five children. Fergie preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 1993.

In addition to working as a salesperson in the New York Store for more than 25 years, Donna was growing and preserving her own food long before it became fashionable. She spent endless hours in her vegetable and flower gardens and never passed up an opportunity to go fishing. For many years Donna and Fergie baked and delivered homemade bread to elderly friends, followed by Saturday night dancing for hours at the Eagles in Pendleton.

Donna was a devout member of the Catholic Church and volunteered in all the parishes she attended. She was also a member of the Catholic Altar Society. She volunteered many hours in her daughter Alberta’s special needs classroom and at the State Hospital teaching patients craft projects.

Donna loved all types of crafting. She often hosted a craft club in her home and enjoyed making homemade gifts for friends and family. She received the “Good Neighbor Award” from the Tutuilla Home Extension, where she served as vice-president and project leader. She was also a leader in Blue Birds, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the PTA and the Grange. Above all, Donna would say she loved being a mother and wife and providing for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fergie, and two children, Dianna Lee Thyfault and Dr. Alberta Jean Thyfault.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Marion and Pat Thyfault of San Pedro, Calif., E’Louise and Doug McCormick of Klamath Falls and Dennis and Kathy Thyfault of Hooper, Utah; and 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
