LA GRANDE — Madras watches its hope for a berth in the state championship tournament disappear in the second half as La Grande won a 65-43 decision in Saturday's 4A playoff game.
It was a change in defense that shut down Madras' ace Maria Stacona after 17 first-half points and help send the La Grande Tigers to the 4A girls state baseball tournament Wednesday.
According to La Grande coach Doug Girdner, it was changing the Tigers' defensive philosophy on Stacona that limited the sophomore to just two second half points before she fouled out of the game 20 seconds into the fourth quarter.
When Stacona left the game, she had 19 points and the Tigers had a 47-38 lead.
La Grande's Breanna Partney led all scorers with 26 points.

Banks 59, Philomath 48
The Banks' Braves will meet La Grande in the 4A quarterfinals Wednesday at McGill Coliseum on the Oregon State University campus. Banks won the Cowapa league and will bring a 21-3 record in the tournament. The Lady Braves defeated Philomath by a 59-48 score Saturday to earn their tournament ticket.
