State tournament notebook: Lots of dramatics in Gill on Day 1

CORVALLIS — The quarterfinals of the girls 4A state tournament weren’t short on dramatics Wednesday in Gill Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers held off a second-half rally by Banks to storm into the semifinals against Sutherlin, who had to rally early on and then battle late with Junction City before squeaking by on a pair of Miranda Mendenhall free throws with one second left.
Third-seeded Cascade scored the upset of the day, defeating second-seeded La Salle Prep, 43-42. The Cougars trailed by as much as 10 points in the first half. But CHS cut into the lead and trailed 32-29 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Cascade took its first lead of the second half with 6:21 to play in regulation. The game stayed close until a lay-in by La Salle Prep with 42 seconds to go tied it at 42-all.
Cascade’s Sadie Trump hit one of two free throws with 8.2 seconds left to give the Cougars a 43-42 lead. La Salle Prep had a chance for the win with a lay-in at the buzzer, but the ball rimmed out and Cascade hung on to advance to Thursday’s semifinals against Mazama.
And speaking of Mazama....the Vikings looked downright dominating in a 76-37 victory over Brookings-Harbor in Wednesday’s opener.
The Bruins didn’t help themselves by shooting 30 percent (13-43) for the game and turning the ball over 24 times, but still, Mazama looks like it is the team to beat here.
Cascade has its hands full tomorrow.
As much as the Cougars win over La Salle Prep was surprising, though, Sutherlin looking vulnerable against Junction City is just as surprising.
The Bulldogs beat Junction City 41-13 earlier this year and entered Wednesday with a 25-0 record. It goes to show how records and previous match-ups are thrown out the window when teams reach this point in the season.
Thursday should be another exciting day of basketball.
