EOU women race into NAIA 'Sweet 16'

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Eastern Oregon Lady Mountaineers moved into the NAIA’s “Sweet 16” Thursday with a 86-54 win over Southwestern (Kan.).

The third-ranked Mountaineers opened a big lead in the first half, only to see the Moundbuilders rally and tighten the score to just seven points.

Early in the first half, EOU had a three-point lead (19-16) over the Lady Builders but then responded with a 10-2 run that gave them a 29-18 advantage with seven minutes left.

The Lady Builders came back, cutting the lead to six (29-23) with 6:21 left.

The Mountaineers responded with a 17-3 run to close out the half leading 46-26.

EOU senior Brooke Randall led all scorers with 24 points, including being a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line. Korrie Bourn and Jori Freeman added 11 each and Chayla Jones put in 10 points. Freeman fouled out of the game with more than six minutes left.

The Mountaineers had a 50-12 edge in points from inside th key.

The Moundbuilders were led by Montana Rickey’s 11-point effort.

The win improved EOU’s record to 32-2 and extended the team’s winning streak to 26.

The loss dropped the Mounbuilders to 23-8 for the season.

EOU will be playing at 11:45 a.m. Friday against the winner of the Menlo (Calif.) and Jamestown (N.D.) for a berth in the Elite Eight and a Saturday at 11 a.m.
