UNION — The Union/Cove softball team opened its season with an 11-1 victory over Echo/Stanfield Friday.

The Lady Cats jumped on the Cougars with two runs in the first inning before adding another in the second.

But Union/Cove really blew the game open with a four-run third inning that made it a 7-0 lead.

“It was a good game for us,” Union/Cove head coach Paul Phillips said.

“We’re getting a little bit of the rust off. The momentum from the basketball season has carried over.”

Three pitchers combined to hold the Cougars to just one hit in the game.

Freshman Jaiden Wright got the win, pitching two innings. She was relieved by Dani Sturm, who pitched the third and fourth innings.

Carsyn Roberts pitched the final two innings.

Kaci Langford finished 1 for 3 at the plate with a solo home run, while Keesha Sarman was 3-for-4 and Kelsey Walenta went 1-for-3 with a double.

The Lady Cats had seven hits in all.

Union/Cove returns to the field Friday in Athena for a doubleheader with Weston-McEwen.
