William L. McBee

La Grande

William L. McBee, 88, of La Grande, died Saturday at his residence. Burial will take place later at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is handling the arrangements.

 


 

Mildred VanBlokland

La Grande

Mildred Katherine Spencer VanBlokland, 104, died Friday at her home at Vera’s Adult Foster Home in La Grande.  Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. 

 



Betty Maxine Cross

Elgin

1923-2013

Betty Maxine Cross, 89, of Elgin, died April 1 at a local care facility in Elgin. Graveside services will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Summerville Cemetery. A celebration of her life reception will immediately follow at the Elgin Methodist Church. Betty was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Greeley, Colo., to Clarence R. and Lille (Southard) Horn. She attended schools in Greeley, Portland, Highland and Elgin. Betty attended welding school and worked at the Portland shipyards as a welder during the 1940s. She was also a cook for the Elgin school system for many years as well as a nurse at Grande Ronde Hospital and a millworker at the Elgin mill.

She was married to Raymond D. Cross Aug. 26, 1980.

Betty enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. She enjoyed working with ceramics and painting. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing and traveling across the county. She participated in square dancing and most outdoor activities.

Betty is survived by her husband, Raymond of Elgin; son, Kenney Renoe of Elgin; stepson, Fred Erickson of Elgin; three siblings, Danny Horn and his wife, Barbara of Hermiston, Tuffy (Edward) Horn of Hermiston and Bobbie Hudspeth of Redding, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice and Ginger Horn and Renee Erickson, and five brothers, Shorty (Lawrence), Glen, Vance, Bud (Eugene) and Stanley Horn.

Kathleen Victoria Brann

La Grande

1947-2013

Kathleen Victoria Brann, 66, of La Grande, died Feb. 25 in Boise, Idaho, after a brief illness. There will be a private service and her ashes will be scattered over the San Francisco Bay.

Kathleen was born Feb. 19, 1947, to Kathryn “Patsy” (Stanley) and Carthel Brooks Brann in Los Angeles,. She grew up in Alamo and Danville, Calif. Kathleen learned to ride horses at the age of 4 and continued this love on her quarter horse, Valentine, until she went to college.

Kathleen graduated from San Ramon Valley High School in 1964. She earned a baccalaureate degree in 1968 from San Jose State University, where she was known as Kathy and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After college, Kathleen became a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways. She flew for Pan Am until being severely injured as an automobile passenger in a life-changing accident in Portugal in 1969. She returned to the U.S. and recuperated in Los Angeles and then lived in the family beach house in Balboa,
Calif.

Kathleen eventually moved back to the San Francisco Bay area. She relished the life and culture there and was a devoted fan of the Giants. She lived in San Francisco, Petaluma, the Russian River area and Palo Alto before moving to La Grande in 2009 to be close to family.

Kathleen was outgoing and loved movies. She was an avid reader and had a wide range of taste in music. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing her favorite flowers, bearded iris and roses,
and birdwatching. A good cook and self-proclaimed “chick-a-holic,” she was particularly fond of barbecued chicken.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Tracy (Brann) and John Schilling of La Grande; brother, Christopher Brooks Brann of Kalispell, Mont.; best friends, Mary B. and Charlie Brock of Nevada City, Calif., and Clare and John Bostwick of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two nephews.
