ECHO — The Enterprise/Joseph softball team dropped four more games over the weekend, getting swept by Grant Union 4-3, 7-4, and then by Echo/Stanfield 6-2, 7-1. The Cubs are now 0-9.

“Defensively, we’re just not playing that well at all,” E/J head coach Travis Huffman said. “Our pitchers are doing a good enough job, but the defense isn’t backing them up.”

In the opener against Grant Union, Enterprise/Joseph squandered a 2-0 lead after the third inning. Holly Taylor took the loss, striking out nine and walking one. Hailee McClure had a double, and both Stephanie Simpson and Amy Edison finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Both teams had six hits.

In Game 2, the Cubs were leading 4-3 after the top of the fifth before Grant Union put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth before going on to win. Simpson took the loss in the circle, while Edison added two more hits including a home run.

Kylie Willis had a triple in the loss.

“We’re hitting the ball pretty well,” Huffman said. “But we’re watching too many third strikes.”

The Cubs’ struggles continued Saturday against Echo/Stanfield, as Enterprise/Joseph fell into a 4-0 hole early in Game 1 and never recovered.

Taylor struck out four and walked four in the loss. Edison had a pair of doubles.

The Cougars blew open a 1-1 first inning tie in Game 2 by putting up two runs in the second and adding three more in the fourth.

Simpson struck out five and walked two for the Cubs. She also had two hits.

“I think once we get people in their right positions, we’ll be fine,” Huffman said. “Hopefully that happens soon enough.”

The Cubs will host La Grande’s junior varsity squad Tuesday before hosting Wallowa Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Cougars opened the season with a pair of losses to Grant Union (14-4, 8-0) over the weekend.
