Joseph ‘Joe’ Davis

Summerville

1942-2013

Joseph Frederick “Joe” Davis, 71, of Summerville, died at his residence April 11. A celebration of Joe’s Life with military honors, will be at Loveland Funeral Chapel, La Grande at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Joe was born Jan. 1, 1942, in Woodburn to C. Newton and Harriet M. (Crowe) Davis. He was raised in Woodburn and went to school in St. Paul. After high school graduation, Joe furthered his education and training becoming a master electrician. He was owner of Davis Electric. Joe served his country in the National Guard achieving the rank of second lieutenant

Davis Electric originated in St. Paul. While there, Joe was married to Kathryn Ernst. He moved to Summerville in 1989. While living in Summerville, Joe met his longtime companion Jolene Quintel. They both loved fishing, hunting and domestic projects at home. The pickled asparagus and beets they canned together were amazing, family members said. He raced boats and water skied when he was younger.

Later, he focused on volunteer work for various service clubs including the St. Paul Rodeo Association, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Union County Fair Board. Joe touched many lives with his big heart and willingness to help others. His stature was dwarfed by the size of his heart and kindness for others.

In addition to his electrical business, Joe realized his dream of owning a bar and grill in La Grande by opening Joe’s Place.

Joe’s Place became a gathering place for many in town to socialize, enjoy scrumptious home cooking, and live music. Joe loved to be surrounded by his friends and family. His love of hosting events and cooking for his friends soon grew into a catering business. Joe’s smile was biggest when he manned his custom grill in his red apron and spatula in hand. Joe and his traveling grill served many company picnics, wedding receptions, class reunions, and family gatherings from Oregon to Utah.

Surviving are his siblings, Marian C. Piper and her husband Harley, of Woodburn; Annette Smith and her husband Jerry, of St. Paul; Don C. Davis and his wife, Nancy of Corvallis; 11 nieces and nephews and 26 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Harriet and Charles Davis and his nephew, Jamie E. Smith.

Contributions (in lieu of flowers) may be made to American Legion Post 43, in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.,
La Grande OR 97850.
