Letters to the editor for April 26, 2013

Kudos to those who made ‘in Her Shoes’ a success

To the Editor:

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It’s easy to see just by looking at the daily news that sexual assault is a huge national and international issue, yet it is a topic shrouded in silence and secrecy.

According to the Rape Abuse Incest National Network, one in six women and one in 33 men will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetimes.

As an advocate for victims of sexual assault, I have seen firsthand the affects on victims, families and their friends that last sometimes for years. Far too often, people view sexual assault as a women’s issue. However, it is a community issue that needs community involvement.

That is why Shelter From the Storm applauds the “real” men and women who participated in last Thursday’s Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event. It was amazing to see the Eastern Oregon University president and football team, judges and community members wobbling around in red heels to bring awareness to the problem of sexual assault.

We are so impressed with the men, women, athletes, coaches, students and children who came out to support this event.

A special thanks to the sponsors, Shelter From the Storm volunteers, board members, Sgt. Tammy Gordon and community partners who made this event possible.
