Support Affordable Health Care for All Oregon Plan

To the Editor:

Americans help each other in times of tragedy. Look at what happened in Boston and West, Texas. We stood behind our neighbors. Health care is not as dramatic as the above mentioned incidents, but it can be a life or death situation. We need to help each other and advocate for a single-payer health care system where everyone will have health insurance coverage. This is why I am urging you to support HB 2922, the Affordable Health Care for All Oregon Plan Act.

More than one in five residents, 20 percent of Eastern Oregon, are younger than age 65 and did not have health insurance in 2010. Incredible. Malheur County, has 27 percent uninsured or 6,200 individuals; Umatilla County has 23 percent uninsured or 18,972 individuals; Wallowa County has 22 percent uninsured or 1,542 individuals; Baker County has 20 percent uninsured or 3,227 individuals; and Union County has 19 percent uninsured or nearly 4,000 individuals.

The majority of the estimated 33,941 uninsured residents of these five counties represent the underemployed working. In Oregon, there are approximately 646,000 uninsured individuals plus 315,000 who are under insured.

The health and prosperity of our state is only as strong as the sickest person. We need health care for everyone now. If we all have health care and a single-payer system, we will save money and have a healthier population. Call Representative Jenson or email him and urge him to support HB 2922.
