Prevent substance abuse in community

To the Editor:

Summer, a season filled with celebrations and recreational activities where substance use and abuse occurs, is upon us. Because of the risks that substance use presents, National Prevention Week was established. The theme for 2013 is “Your voice. Your choice. Make a difference.”

Union County’s Safe Communities Coalition would like to encourage your involvement in National Prevention Week May 12-18. National Prevention Week is held near the start of summer as summertime, and the preceding weeks, is filled with prom festivities, graduation celebrations, wedding ceremonies, outdoor sports and backyard activities.

Each day of National Prevention Week focuses on a different aspect of prevention. Specific days focus on tobacco prevention/cessation, underage drinking, prescription drug abuse and illicit drug use, alcohol abuse, suicide prevention and promotion of mental, emotional and behavioral well-being. You can choose to spotlight one area of prevention, or prevention in general. The choice of your focus is not nearly as important as your message that emphasizes together we can make a

National Prevention Week also provides us an opportunity to recognize ongoing community prevention efforts. Real prevention requires the dedication of volunteers making the choice to follow a healthy lifestyle and make a difference in our community every day. There are many ways you can become involved.

Volunteer for the Drug Free Relay, held this year on Sept. 28. The next planning meeting is May 22 at Center for Human Development. For more information, contact DeAnne at 541-962-8800. You can also join the Union County Safe Communities Coalition, whose mission is “working together for a safe, healthy, drug-free community.” The coalition has many projects or committees that need your support. Call Robin at 541-963-1068, or visit our website at www.ucsafecommunities.org.

Use National Prevention Week to become one of our prevention champions. Together we can make a difference.
