Tigers maul Bulldogs

BAKER CITY — The La Grande baseball team wrapped up the Greater Oregon League schedule with a sweep over rival Baker Friday.

The Tigers took the first game, 11-1, before winning the nightcap, 7-4.

The wins improve LHS to 14-8 overall and 9-3 in the GOL. Baker falls to 7-14 and 3-9 in league.

With the second-place finish, the Tigers will host a play-in game.

LHS got another strong start by Kaleb White in the opener Friday.

White pitched five innings, striking out 11 and allowing five hits. He also went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Jake Chamberlain, Brandon Cedarholm and Mitch Workinger each added two RBIs, and La Grande finished with nine hits to take the first game.

The Tigers had to use a late-game rally in the nightcap to get by the Bulldogs. 

After LHS held a 4-0 lead through four innings, Baker tied the game with a four-run fifth inning.

But the Tigers pushed across three runs in the sixth inning, and Workinger was able to close out the Bulldogs to finish off the sweep.

Garett Avila got the win, going four innings, striking out six and allowing two hits.

White went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Tyson Wicklander, Trenton Powers, Josh Gambill and Workinger each added one RBI.

La Grande outhit Baker, 8-4.

Mason Cline, Caleb Custer, Dan Stinson and Micah Mespelt all recorded one hit for the Bulldogs.

La Grande hosts DeSales High School (Wash.) Tuesday for senior day. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

That will be the final game of the regular season for
La Grande. The Tigers will have to wait and see who they host for the play-in game. 

In other GOL action, Ontario swept McLoughlin 15-0, 12-0, Friday.
