ENTERPRISE — Bird Dog Signs opened this spring in Enterprise filling a storefront on the highly visible corner of River and Main streets and ensuring the county continues to have a dependable, full-service sign shop.

Melissa Duncan worked for venerable signmaker Ted Hays for 10 years. When Hays retired, Duncan bought Hays’ printer and equipment and moved next door, painting her Bird Dog logo on the front door; an artistic representation of, well, a dog and a bird...

The storefront next door to where Duncan worked with Hays came up for lease and she said she jumped on the opportunity.

“There’s so much light in here,” said Duncan.

Her husband, who owns and runs Eagle Eye Construction and Renovation, has lent a hand with her business with both his carpentry and math skills.

“He’s like a human calculator,” said Duncan.

Duncan said she first came to Wallowa County to visit her father-in-law more than a decade ago. She and Rob are avid outdoors enthusiasts, but it was the people that made her want to relocate from Medford.

“People help each other out. That’s why I moved here.”

Duncan and husband Rob own two bird dogs; a black Lab and a German wire-haired. Though she doesn’t hunt, her love of her dogs influenced the name for the business, and Hank, the Labrador, was a patient model for her logo design.

“I can’t imagine doing anything else and everybody’s been extremely supportive,” said Duncan.
