Patricia N. Sorn, 81, of La Grande, died June 26 at a local care facility. A full obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory will be handling the arrangements.

June Leona (Wilkinson) Dewey, 95 of La Grande, died in a local retirement home June 17. At the family’s request, there will be no services. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the 


June was born June 2, 1918, in Medford to Leon and Ella W. (Hackert) Wilkinson. June’s father was born in
La Grande. 

Leon’s father, Merritt Wilkinson, and family emigrated from Missouri on the Oregon Trail to High Valley in 1864. 

June’s mother, Ella, was born in Nebraska, and her father, Fred Hackert, emigrated from Germany to Nebraska in 1881.

June’s husband, Orville Lamont (Monty) Dewey, preceded her in death in Central Point in 1994. He was born in 1919 in Talent. They met in high school at the Jacksonville school in Jacksonville and were married in San Diego, in 1940. Their union lasted 54 years.

Survivors include three children, Virginia (Dewey) and Gary Hager of Cove, David and Sheila Dewey of Fremont, Calif., and Teresa (Dewey) Maciel of Oroville, Calif.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one nephew.

June was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ella Marie (Wilkinson) Moore of Central Point; and baby (boy) Wilkinson.

Barbara May Phelps Bloom



Barbara May Phelps Bloom, 87, of Cove, died June 20.

A graveside service will be held at the Cove Cemetery at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Barbara was born May 9, 1926, in Sacramento, Calif., where she lived much of her younger life. She married Edward A. Bloom in 1954 and moved to his hometown of Cove. Edward preceded her in death in 1999.

Barbara was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than 50 years. During that period, she taught Sunday school, primary and was in the Relief Society. 

She loved music and had a beautiful voice. She sang in the church choir and was often asked to perform solos for special occasions.

Bobbie, as she was known to her friends, had many hobbies. She knitted bandages for lepers, canned fruit from her trees and spent many quiet hours reading. 

She loved to work in her yard, often bringing home half-dead bargain plants and nursing them back to health. 

For a time she was a prolific painter, and her home was filled with painting projects and pictures she had done. 

Genealogy was a special passion, and she spent many hours in the genealogical library gathering family

She is survived by a brother, Boyd Phelps; a sister, Beverly Leonard; five children, Cherie Murray, Whitey Bloom, Tom Martin, Ann Bloom-Dickison and Rick Bloom; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Her daughter, Patty Dwerlkotte, died in 1985.
