PORTLAND — A graduate of a Portland-area high school is among the 19 firefighters killed in an Arizona wildfire.

The Oregonian reported 24-year-old John J. Percin Jr. was killed when a windblown wildfire overcame his team, the Granite Mountain Hotshots, north of Phoenix on Sunday.

They were based in Prescott, Ariz. It was the deadliest single day for U.S. firefighters since Sept. 11.

Percin graduated from West Linn High School in 2007.

Percin's father, John Percin Sr., says Monday is a difficult day, and he doesn't know "a lot of things yet."

Former baseball teammate Geoff McEvers remembered Percin as fun-loving.

One man on the 20-member Hotshot crew survived, and that was because he was moving the unit's truck at the time.
