Teresa Sue Schoen

Teresa Sue Schoen, 53, Union, died Wednesday at a Boise, Idaho, hospital. A full obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory will be in charge of her care and arrangements.

Cove

Richard Austin, 78, Cove, died at his home Thursday. A full obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of his care and arrangements.


 

Patrick Earl Rankin

Island City

1927-2013

Patrick Earl Rankin was born to Earl and Mary Finley Rankin on Oct. 20, 1927, at their farm home near Island City, where he also died on July 9.  

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the church in care of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. 

Patrick attended grade school at Island City and graduated from La Grande High School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a sergeant. He received an honorable discharge in 1947.  

After attending Oregon State University for three years, he married Charlotte Stone on Dec. 31, 1950. Patrick received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from OSU in 1954.  

After graduating, he was hired by Washington State University as a county settler assistant agent to survey topography and design surface irrigation systems in Franklin County, eastern Washington, for the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. 

Resigning in 1961, he returned to Island City with his wife and children to assume operation of his family’s farm and ranch. He was involved in farming for the next 45 years. 

Patrick was a skilled carpenter and furniture maker, and loved airplanes, traveling and geography, and collecting and polishing agates. 

In 1995, he and Charlotte began RV traveling throughout the United States. 

He was an active member of the First Christian Church in La Grande and served as a dedicated elder and deacon.  

Survivors include children and spouses Charle (Tim), Paul (Darlene), Peter and Kaye (Jim); 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; and close friends, Hong and Inna Im and Erma Bates.
