Luby C. Teem



Luby C. Teem, 69, of Elgin died Aug. 19 as the result of a traffic accident. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Summerville Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Luby was born on Dec. 22, 1943, the daughter of Thurman and Mary Ellen (Millington) Ramay in Bakersfield, Calif.  She graduated from high school in 1962, and on Jan. 17, 1963, she married Kenneth Teem in Kerman, Calif. They moved to Albany, and in 1974, they came to the Grande Ronde Valley. She pulled green chain for the Boise Cascade plywood mill for 27 years. 

After her retirement, she drove cars for dealer trades for Legacy Ford and Dodge. She also shuttled cars from Troy to Minam for rafters. She loved taking care of her family and riding motorcycles. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, camping, hunting and playing games of all sorts and teaching her grandchildren to play those games also.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Teem of Elgin; children, Wilton Teem of Elgin, Sheila and Kevin Gregory of Elgin and Travis and Marcey Teem of Albany; sisters, Bernice Simmons of Arkansas and Dorothy Housing of Lebanon; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives. 

She was preceded in death by brothers, Buford and Theodore Ramay.

 Deborah Vera Cleveland

La Grande


Deborah Vera Cleveland, 60, of La Grande, died Aug. 16 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande.

Debby was born on June 30, 1953, the daughter of Harold and Inez (Ambel) Beickel in La Grande. 

She graduated from
La Grande High School with the Class of 1971, and on Jan. 25, 1972, she married Robert Cleveland in Walla Walla, Wash. They lived for a short time in Medford and Pendleton before returning to La Grande in February of 1973. 

She taught piano out of their home from 1976 until 1998. She also was the organist for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for 10 years. She loved music and spending time with family, especially the little ones. She enjoyed camping and always provided popsicles for the children no matter what time of year it was.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Cleveland of
La Grande; sister, Teresa Collins of Umatilla; brother, Greg Beickel of Clackamas; two grandchildren and numerous extended family. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Cleveland, in 2006.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation in care of Daniels~Knopp. 

 Helen Evans

La Grande


Helen Evans, 91, of La Grande, died Aug. 18 at her home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Summerville Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Helen was born on Jan. 18, 1922, the daughter of Clark and Lucy (Awmiller) Hamlin in Last Chance, Colo. The family moved to La Grande when she was in the fifth grade. She graduated from La Grande High School with the Class of 1941. 

During WWII, she worked for an optical company and a laundry facility. On Oct. 23, 1946, she married Warren David Evans Sr. in
La Grande. He preceded her in death on May 3, 2005.

Survivors include her children, Warren Evans Jr. of Boise and Joyce and Jim Valentine of Priest River, Idaho; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives.


Steven Allen Short

La Grande


Steven Allen Short, 56, of La Grande, died at a local care facility Aug. 18. He battled liver cancer for the past year. There will be no public services. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Steve was born Feb. 13, 1957, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Almer N. and Judy M. (Scrivings) Short. 

He was raised in the Phoenix area and graduated from Paradise Valley High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served four years before receiving an honorable discharge.

Steve moved to La Grande, where he was employed as general manager for Miller’s Home Center for seven years. He enjoyed riding his Harley, camping and fishing.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, Chris, Jeff and Steven; two stepsons, Chris and Chad; his mother, Judy; and two sisters, Pam and Corinne.

 Dorothea LaVelle Haynes



Dorothea LaVelle Haynes, 92, died Aug. 6 in Ontario after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. 

At her request, no services are planned.

Known as LaVelle, she was born May 24, 1921, to Dolly and Harry Hunt in Baker City. She lived in Bates and Pleasant Valley and graduated from high school in Baker City. 

In 1945, LaVelle married Wallace “Rocky” Longacre in Wilmington, Del. She married Louis J. Haynes in 1972 in La Grande.

LaVelle worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles for more than 20 years. She was a member of many bowling leagues, the Eagles Lodge and Rebekah Lodge. She was active in the senior center in Baker City and was a member of the Baker City Christian Church.

Survivors include her children, Judy Sherwood of Ontario, George Longacre of Yakima, Wash., and Marion Smith of Aloha; siblings, Harry Hunt Jr. of Prescott, Ariz., and Guy Hunt of
Boise, Idaho; and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

 Evelyn Jean (McGuire) Bailey

Formerly of La Grande


Evelyn Jean Bailey, 86, died July 14 in Vancouver, Wash. Evelyn was born July 2, 1927, in Jarbridge, Nev., one of two children of Eli and Parolee McGuire.

Evelyn graduated from
La Grande High School and had lived in Woodland, Wash., for the last 28 years and worked for many years at JC Penney in Vancouver.

Evelyn, who was known by those closest to her as Grammy, will be remembered for her love of family, her hard work and her generosity.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Vay Bott and husband, Tom, of Woodland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vayle A. Bailey, and her brother, Eli Hugh McGuire Jr. of Pacific, Wash.

Funeral services were at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver on July 24. 

Donations may be made in Evelyn’s name to the Humane Society.
