Bernadine Helen (Pullen) Hawley

Formerly of Wallowa County


Bernadine Helen (Pullen) Hawley, 80, died Aug. 22 at her home in Stanfield surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise with interment to follow at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Bernadine was a longtime resident of Wallowa County. She was born Dec. 9, 1932, to William and Goldie Pullen in La Grande. After graduating from high school, she married Vern Hawley of Wallowa. The marriage lasted more than 50 years and the couple had
two children, Eldon and

Bernadine was a certified nurses’s assistant at the Wallowa Valley Care Center for many years. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sister, Shirley Kirby of Enterprise; her brother, Bill Pullen of Elgin; her son, Eldon (Susan) Hawley of Stanfield; her daughter, Pam Hawley of Walla Walla; and seven grandchildren.


James Dwight Sandlin



James Dwight Sandlin, 77, died in Enterprise Aug. 22. 

A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bollman Funeral Home, with interment following at Enterprise Cemetery.

He was born March 4, 1936, in Joseph, the son of Homa Sandlin and Anna Rosella Briggs. He lived in Joseph, Imnaha, Unity and Enterprise. 

James attended Liberty School until the fourth grade, then moved to Imbler and attended Park School on the upper Imnaha

He married Patricia Carlson, who he had met at the skating rink at Wallowa Lake.

He worked for Dick Granger stud mill, John Graves at Unity Mill and went to work for Dick Hammock, Dougherty Logging and Shockman and Sons.

James enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was an avid gardener. He belonged to the Eagles and Elks clubs.

Survivors include his wife, of Enterprise; children, Stacie Carper (Barry) of Milton-Freewater, Vicki Lovell (Sam) of Milton-Freewater, Jeffrey H. Sandlin (Janie) of Walla Walla, Wash., and James Sandlin of Kettle Falls, Wash.; sibling, H. Duane Sandlin (Ina) of Enterprise; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Dying earlier were his parents, and uncles Hubert and Gerald Sandlin.
