ELGIN — The Elgin Huskies will make their debut in the eight-man game this season. And head coach Brock Eckstein said his players are excited for the change.

“The players are welcoming it,” Eckstein said.

“We got a good jump on it this summer by going to the Cove (eight-man) Camp.”

Eckstein said the Huskies will be a run-oriented team this season, with the likes of Chris Roberts and Hayden Bershenyi at running back. He said Curtis Little and Stephen Howes are big linemen who will open big holes for the backs.

“We’ll be a run-heavy team this season,” he said. “I have a good stable of running backs.”

Eckstein said Gage Little is in line to start at quarterback. Little took reps under center at the end of last year.

“Gage worked with the Eastern Oregon University quarterback coach this summer and looked really good,” Eckstein said.

Eckstein said the Huskies defeated three teams at the Cove Camp, including Rosalia, Wash., who Elgin plays in Week 5.

He said that experience let the players know that they can compete at the eight-man level.

“We wanted to get over (to Cove) and see where we stack up,” Eckstein said.

Eckstein said his team is confident this season will be a successful one.

“We have high expectations for this season,” the coach said.

The Huskies open the season against Pine Eagle Sept. 6 in Halfway.

“I don’t know a lot about them, I’m working on scouting them now,” Eckstein said. “The one thing I’ve heard is that their players never quit. So, we’ll have to be ready.”
