Jack C. Saunders

Formerly of La Grande, Cove, Elgin


Jack C. Saunders of New Meadows and Weiser, Idaho, died July 27 near Carey, Idaho, while on a motorcycle trip with his family when his Harley crashed.

Jack was born in
La Grande on Oct. 20, 1945, and graduated from Cove High School in 1963 and Eastern Oregon State College in 1967.

An excellent teacher, Jack started his career first in Donnelly, Idaho; then Elgin for seven years; and then Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, until 1982, when he moved to Boise.

Jack and Cathie Tindall were married May 27, 1984. He worked for Eutectic Corp. in specialty welding sales until returning to teaching in 1992.

After several years teaching at Riley, they moved back to Idaho, near Weiser. Jack taught upper grades at Annex School for 12 years, retiring in 2008.

His winning ways, excellent character and positive encouragement influenced many, family members said.

Loree Lucy Leonard

La Grande


Loree Lucy Leonard, 90, of La Grande, died at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., on July 22. A celebration of her life will be held at the First Christian Church in La Grande at 10 a.m. Sept. 14.

Loree was born on July 10, 1923, in Bartlett to Emery and Edrie (Mallory) Lyon. She lived in Milwaukee, Wis.; Azuza and Glendora, Calif.; and
La Grande, where she graduated from high school. She was trained and served the United States as a civilian cadet nurse in the Army.

She married Carl Ready and later Roy Leonard.

Loree was employed at Lanterman State Hospital for the severely developmentally delayed in Pomona, Calif., for 25 years.

Loree enjoyed reading books, volunteer work, travel, playing bridge and pinochle, listening to old Christian hymns and watching old movies. She also enjoyed walking one mile two to three times a week.

Loree was a member of Neighbor to Neighbor, Island City Cemetery Board, First Christian Church, Gem Club and Good Sam Club.

Loree was a hard-working single mother to one daughter and one granddaughter.

Loree is survived by her daughter, Vicki Schofield of Arcadia, Calif.; sister, Iris Leonard of La Grande; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and one niece and two nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Emery and Edrie Lyon; her husband, Roy Leonard; brother, Emery Oren Lyon; aunt, Dorothy Mallory; and nephew Steve Leonard.
