Poor tackling hurts Cove

COVE — The Leopards struggled with one of the most important fundamentals of football during a 50-22 loss to Rosalia, Wash., Friday.

“We just didn’t tackle anyone consistently,” Leopards head coach Shawn Parker said. “It’s a young team that we are putting out on the field, and it showed at times today. We did a better job in certain aspects of the game, but failed in others.”

The bright spot for Cove was in the return game, with a pair of kickoff returns.

Tayt Duby returned a kickoff 96 yards and Chad Witty had a 55-yard return for a score.

“We had one returned against us in the last game,” Parker said. “We spent a lot of time working on that aspect of the game this past week.”

It all came down to tackling for the Leopards as they allowed touchdowns of 42, 47, 65 and 80 yards during the game.

Witty led the Leopards with 56 yards on 16 rushing attempts.

Cole Laci added 49 yards on 10 attempts.

Jake Harris scored the lone offensive touchdown for Cove on a 5-yard run with 2:03 left to go in the game.

The Leopards travel to Adrian for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
