Summerville Baptist Church is celebrating 58 years of ministry Sunday.

The public is invited to the 11 a.m. service, a meal to follow, and the 6 p.m. praise service.

Summerville Baptist Church started small. It began as an effort to reach children through a Vacation Bible School. This past summer, the church had more than 100 children come to Vacation Bible School.

“Reaching children is still a priority for us, and this past Sunday we had children ride our buses to our services from Elgin and La Grande,” Pastor Franklin Humber said.

The first Bible school 58 years ago turned into a Sunday School for children, and then for adults.

The church still has Sunday School classes for children and Bible study classes for teens and adults.

In the early days, the outreach did not go much beyond Summerville and Imbler, Humber said.

“But over the years our membership and our Gospel outreach has spread throughout the entire Grande Ronde Valley and throughout the world through our 26 missionaries that we help to support every month,” Humber said. “God has grown Summerville Baptist Church and he has done, and is doing, many things through his work in his church in this place. Many people in the Grande Ronde Valley have been reached through this ministry, and we want the public to help us celebrate what the Lord has done.

“If the Lord has used this church to bless your life over the years, please join us to celebrate the wonder of God’s wonderful work in this place.”
