Contractors and city crews are working on separate projects that will ultimately improve the look and function of 20th Street.

The City of La Grande is working to install a new 48-inch storm sewer that will re-route water from 16th Street to the slough on 20th Street. That work will preface reconstruction work to come in 2015.

Meanwhile, Les Schwab Tire Center is getting ready for a new parking lot off 20th Street. This week contractors demolished the old Pirate’s Den and other buildings.

“We are coordinating with them so our projects don’t interfere,” said La Grande Public Works Director Norm Paullus.

Brian Hudspeth, project manager at Les Schwab Tire Center, said the new parking lot will have more spaces for customers plus appropriate storm drainage and landscaping.

“When the city gets the street done it’ll look nice,” Hudspeth said.

Jarod Teeter, project manager with Mike Becker, the contractor doing the project, said completion of the project is slated for mid-November. The new lot will have 16 stalls, he said.

“It’ll be a beautification of the lot, that’s for sure,” he said.

The Les Schwab project is partially funded through La Grande’s Urban Renewal Agency, which has a goal to address blight in the city.
