A La Grande man injured in a Wednesday morning house fire died as a result of his injuries.

Harry McKaig, 61, died Wednesday after he was taken to Grande Ronde Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained when his home in the Stonewood Mobile Home Park caught fire.

La Grande Fire Chief Bruce Weimer said the cause of the fire, which officials believe started under the stove, remains under investigation.

“We are waiting for the medical examiner’s report to help us with the fire cause determination,” he said.

Fire crews were called to the scene at Stonewood lot 66 just before 9 a.m. Wednesday. The reporting call indicated someone was still inside the manufactured home, officials said.

Police officers arrived at the scene first, Weimer said, but were driven back out of the home by smoke.

Firefighters attacked the fire through the back door near the kitchen.

Weimer said McKaig was next to a wheelchair, but was not in it “as if he was trying to get away from the fire.”

Police helped EMTs get the victim out of the home through a window, Weimer said.

Weimer said a pet, a small dog, had died.

La Grande Fire crews were aided by the La Grande Police Department, the Oregon State Police and La Grande Rural Fire Chief Larry Wooldridge.

The McKaig family has set up a memorial fund for Roxanna, Harry’s wife, at U.S. Bank in La Grande. They have been married 41 years and have two children.
