Eastern picks up win on pitch

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Mauriana Gonzalez scored two goals and led the Eastern Oregon University women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over The Evergreen State College Thursday.

Along with Gonzalez, Sydney Nelson scored one goal and recorded two assists in the victory for EOU (7-2-1, 3-2-0). This is EOU’s sixth shutout of the season, which is tied for the most shutouts in one season in school history.

EOU broke the scoreless tie less than 13 minutes into the game. Sydney Nelson controlled the ball and fired a shot which beat Kaitlin Mackenzie on the right post putting the Mountaineers ahead 1-0.

Less than 10 minutes later, Mauriana Gonzalez scored her first goal of the game. Tori Fedora found Gonzalez on a quick cross and Gonzalez beat Mackenzie to make it 2-0.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Gonzalez scored her second goal of the game. Four minutes later, EOU added its fourth goal after a corner kick by Nelson that Carolyn Danek headed in to make it a 4-0 lead.

EOU returns to the pitch Saturday when it plays at Northwest University at 3 p.m.
