La Grande’s park and recreation director is stepping down.

After more than a decade with the city, Mark Touhey’s last day was Friday.

“I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with you and other members of the team as we initiated and concluded a variety of significant projects over the last several years,” Touhey said in his letter of resignation to City Manager Robert Strope.

Strope said Touhey was instrumental in launching the greenway project, which ultimately will link Riverside Park with Island City. Strope also mentioned the amenities added at Morgan Lake and other city parks under Touhey’s leadership.

“He has done a lot of really great things for our parks and rec system during his tenure, and we’re absolutely going to miss him,” Strope said.

The city manager said he has not yet formulated a plan with what to do with the open position.

Until the situation is resolved,  Strope will pick up the responsibilities of parks director. Strope said he will be evaluating the position in the interim.
