Traci Mentgen’s celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the New Life Center in Island City.

Vernal Fay “Vern” Olson, 88, of Alicel Lane died October 13, 2013 at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. 

Vern was born on Nov. 16, 1924, the son of Christopher and Amanda (Fitchell) Olson in Hurdsfield, N.D. He was raised and educated in North Dakota. After his education was complete, he traveled all over by rail including Texas, New Mexico and California. He lived in Seattle for a time and briefly in Pendleton, where he met his future wife.

On Aug. 14, 1944, he married Betty Jean Traverso in La Grande, where they made their home. They farmed on Alicel Lane. He also worked at Boise Cascade until his retirement in 1986.

Vern was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Oregon Cattleman’s Association. He enjoyed horseback riding and riding four-wheelers. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to three generations, family members said. He loved telling stories about his past, especially of the times traveling. The family enjoyed many times at their family cabin at Indian Creek.

Survivors include his children, Diane Higley of La Grande, Verna and Steve Olsen of Island City and Terry and Toni Olson of Elgin; brother, Floyd Olson of Seattle; sister, Esther and Clarence Habbestad of Seattle; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife in January 2009; a sister, Helen Griffin; his parents; brother, Clinton Olson; and son-in-law, Dave Higley.



Cody Lee Locke

Formerly of Enterprise



Cody Lee Locke, 29, of Uintah, Utah, died on Oct. 10 peacefully in his sleep.

The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Enterprise Christian Church. Pastor David Bruce will be officiating. 

Cody was born in La Grande on Dec. 6, 1983, and grew up in Enterprise. Cody is the son of Kirk and Diana Locke of Uintah. 

Cody recently worked in the oil fields in North Dakota until December 2012, when he moved to Uintah to be close to family. Cody loved spending time with family and friends, and he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, snowboarding and four-wheeling. He lived life fully and knew no strangers.  

Cody is survived by his parents, Kirk and Diana Locke; sisters, Casey Morse, husband Jon Morse, and sons Ethan and Trysten; Heather Rector, husband Clay Rector and sons Wyatt and Dylan; fiancé, Misty Hays; grandmothers, Shirley Jennings and Laura Jean Locke; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. 



Mandy Nadeau 

La Grande



Mandy Jo See McLaughlin Nadeau, 37, of La Grande, died Oct. 10. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Faith Center in Island City. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Mandy was born on June 24, 1976, in La Grande to Ricky Founds and Desiree See. She was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Randy McLaughlin. Mandy attended La Grande High School, where she participated in basketball and softball and graduated in 1995. She went to Eastern Oregon University and then to Blue Mountain Community College and received her associate degree in 1999. Mandy married Colton Christy and Shawn Berry, with both marriages ending in divorce. 

She later married Seth Nadeau. Mandy worked as a dental assistant and then became a stay-at-home mom.

Mandy enjoyed reading, hiking, camping, listening to music and spending time with her family and friends. She was always involved in her children’s activities and volunteered as a coach and in scouts.

Mandy is survived by her father, Rick Founds; mother and stepfather, Desiree See and Mark Loree of La Grande; stepfather, Randy McLaughlin of Nampa, Idaho; husband, Daniel Seth Nadeau of La Grande; children, Kye McLaughlin of Lancaster, Calif., Zoe Christy of La Grande, Makenna Berry of La Grande and Anthony Nadeau of Tuscon, Ariz.; sisters, Dawn McLaughlin of Lancaster, Kyira and Dan Chadwell of Nampa, Kimberly and Stephen See-O’Connell of Sammamish, Wash., Shontel and Jeff Krantz of La Grande, Leslie and John Martinez of Caldwell, Idaho, Chanelle and Pat Hohrein of Boise, Idaho, Melanie McLaughlin of Caldwell, Nichole Clinkenbeard of Baker City, Jessica Founds of Twin Falls, Idaho, and brother, Richard Founds of Twin Falls; great-grandmother, Helen See; 16 nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Mandy was preceded in death by her grandmother, Linda See; grandfather, Storm See; grandfather, Wesley Founds; uncle, Kenny McLaughlin; niece, Alanna Martinez; and great-grandmother, LaVelle Harris.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions can be made to help with funeral expenses.
