Tigers close out sweep of GOL verses Baker

BAKER CITY — La Grande completed one part of its season mission Tuesday night.

The Tigers volleyball team completed a perfect season in the Greater Oregon League with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 win on the road against Baker City. 

Not only did La Grande run the table with a 6-0 GOL record, but the Tigers didn’t lose a single set in the process.

“That was our goal going into the match,” La Grande head coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius said. “It’s a pretty amazing thing to do. We knew Baker was going to play us tough tonight, and they did. It got tougher each set.”

The opening set breezed by due the the service game of the Tigers. Senior Kendall Kirkland served 18 straight points in the opening set, and picked up six service aces.

“We wanted to serve agressive,” Becker-Bisenius said. “Sometimes you can get into trouble doing that, but the girls served really well. We took the risks and it paid off.”

As the match wore on, La Grande’s defense met the Bulldogs offense head on. 

“It was a great match defensivley for us,” Becker-Bisenius said. “Brandy Blackman did a great job for us in the back row picking up what Baker was putting over the net.”

Blackman finished with a team-high 17 digs.

Cassie Brownwell collected 15 digs.

La Grande also had one of its players back from injury. Senior Lilly Page was able to work into the roation a few times against the Bulldogs.

“It was nice to have her back out on the floor,” Becker-Bisenius said. “Lilly can do a lot of things. We’re trying to take it slow.

“We’re just waiting for Kali Avila to return from injury and we’ll be back at full strenghth.”

Anna Grigsby had a team-best eight kills on the night, and finished with two solo blocks.

Hanna Cashell had seven kills.

La Grande (6-0 GOL, 16-3 overall) will host Class 3A Vale at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

The Vikings are 6-0 in the Eastern Oregon League and 20-1 overall, and currently No. 1 in their classification.

It will be senior night for the Tigers, and the final match before the start of the playoffs.
