The shade structure at Gangloff Park is officially open for use.

The Union County Ford Institute Leadership Program Cohort 3 and La Grande city officials unveiled the all-weather viewing structure Oct. 23 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The cohort, made of up community members, organized and secured funding for the project.

Charlie Mitchell, cohort member and La Grande community and economic development director, said the addition of the structure to the city park will serve the community but also be a spot for visitors and tourists.

“There’s an opportunity for some people that could be their very first impression of La Grande, enjoying that view,” he said.

Moreover, he said now that view can be enjoyed even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

From all Mitchell can tell, the structure is already being put to use.
