Mountaineers bounce Walla Walla

CALDWELL, Idaho — It wasn’t pretty but the Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team picked up a win in the opening game of the Golden Rule Shootout 76-67 against Walla Walla University in Caldwell, Idaho Friday.

The Mountaineers trailed 34-29 at the half, shooting 31 percent from the floor. Five of the nine first half field goals came from behind the three-point line.

The Wolves shot 51 percent from the floor, 13-of-25, in the first half.

But, the Mountaineer defense and offense gained traction in the second half.

EOU used a 29-7 run to close out the game and pick up its seventh win of the season.

The Mountaineers shot 48 percent in the second half, while Walla Walla cooled off, shooting 32 percent in the final half.

Deonta Edwards and Trevor Phillips paced the Mountaineers, each scoring 13 points.

Phillips added six rebounds.

Kyllian Wood finished a basket shy of a double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds and scoring eight points.

Craig Tucker hit double digits with 11 points.

Walla Walla was led by Tyreek Lucket’s 21 points.

Dusan Sparavalo finished with 14 points.

EOU, 7-0 overall, will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday against Westminster College.
