HILLSBORO — One team was going to come away with its first girls soccer state championship on school history.

For La Grande, it won't happen this season. The Tigers fell to Scappoose 3-1 in the Class 4A state championship at Liberty High School in Hillsboro Saturday.

Alissa Welberg put La Grande on the board first off a loose ball in the 13th minute.

The Indians would even the score off a redirected kick by Emily Muth in the 26th minute, assisted by Madison Verizino.

That score would hold at the half.

Kim Carpenter took advantage of an open net in the 58th minute off a cross by Lucy Davidson, giving Scappoose a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers were forced to mount a comeback shorthanded, after senior midfielder Jasmine Smith received her second yellow card of the match. Smith left with 26 minutes left in the second half.

The Indians tacked on an insurance goal in the 79th minute of a pass from Davidson to Eleanor Jones.

La Grande finished the match with two shots on goal, while Scappoose recorded eight.

The Tigers finished the season 16-1 overall.
