Elgin’s Future Business Leaders of America participated in the national drug and alcohol abuse awareness week, known as “Red Ribbon Week,” during the last week of October.

The student organization started the week with an assembly hosted by local police detectives Jason McKaig and Shaun Gridley. The pair informed the student body about the dangers of drug abuse and about prevention of drug use.

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, student body members participated in Red Ribbon Week awareness by wearing red on Oct. 30.

The Red Ribbon Week organizing FBLA officers Theresa Smolkowski and Jake Burgess wrapped up the week by designating a day called “Fear the Reaper.”

This day demonstrated the reality that every 15 minutes someone dies from drug and alcohol abuse.

Throughout the day, a Future Business Leaders of America member would dress up as the Grim Reaper and come to classes to “reap” students by painting their faces black and white.
